In July 2020 Mid Hants Sand & Aggregates general manager Richard Chewter contacted MEP to see if we could resolve the ongoing problem of sand losses to the lagoon at their Fawley Quarry.
The plant at Fawley quarry processes two very different materials, sea dredged aggregates (BAD), which as a result of the process to win the aggregates is deficient in both fines and silts the other feed stock is the indigenous sand which is extremely fine.

The existing plant is a modular design that produces two sand products, it had at a later date been modified to include a fines recovery unit. When processing sea dredged BAD the main plant recovered the majority of the sand and the additional fines plant recovered very little. When processing the Fawley sand the fines plant was unable to accommodate ore recover all of the fine sand.
MEPs approach is always to look at every process and consider the options, modify or replace the existing plant, in this case only the stacking conveyor would be re-used. Having considered where the new equipment would be positioned physically and, in the flowsheet, it was quickly determined it would occupy the same location.
A bespoke 50 t/h MEP fines recovery plant comprising a sand sump, 8 x 250R Radial Cyclone Manifold, De-Watering Screen with Water Control Box and control system was ordered, delivered and installed on time with no accidents.

Since installing it we have maximised production of bedding sand and significantly reduced losses to the lagoon.”
